This photograph was taken from the northern portion of Cemetery Hill, which is now occupied by Mountain View Cemetery. The view is looking north, toward the site of the West Woods. In the midground on the right is the reverse slope of the hill on the Piper Farm. The Piper farm hill was occupied by G.T. Anderson, Colquitt, and Garland's Brigades during the afternoon, and helped resist the advance of the Union IXth Corps. The Confederate infantry was supported by H.P. Jones and Brooks's batteries, which were located at the eastern foot of the hill, now occupied by the line of trees in the photo.
