This crumbling structure is the barn on the Newcomer barn. It is the original wartime structure that appears in the background of two of Gardner's photographs (583 and 607).

At about noon on the day of the battle, Federal cavalry and horse artillery crossed the middle bridge and occupied the Newcomer farm, including this barn. No major Federal force advanced beyond the Newcomer farm; this immediate region, however, remained occupied for the rest of the day.

Although the Newcomer farm is under private ownership, the US government has obtained a historic easement on the property, which effectively means that it cannot be developed. While this protects the property, it also makes it economically unattractive, even to local farming operations. As a result of neglect, the barn is falling into a serious state of disrepair. The farm and its buildings, therefore, face an uncertain future.
