This view shows the ground just east of the Dunker Church looking north. The abandoned limber chest visible in view 1 is visible here from a different angle. Severe fighting took place here, as Confederate artillery was first driven away and occupied by Tyndale's Brigade moving right to left, eventually taking a position inside the woods. They, in turn were repulsed left to right toward the East Woods, hotly pursued by Confederate Col. Cooke's 27th North Carolina and 3rd Arkansas. Cooke would then be driven back again by the advance of the Union VI Corps, Irwin's Brigade. Ransom's confederate brigade still held the West Woods and applied stiff resistance. Meeting Ransom, the VI Corps stalled here, forming the Union's final line; they could not take and hold the woods around the church. No further advance would be made until the Confederate withdrawal on September 19th.
