#571: View on Battle-field of Antietam, near Sherrick's House, where the Seventy-ninth New York Volunteers fought after they crossed the creek; group of dead Confederates.

#571

This image demonstrates the advantage of working with a negative instead of a stereo card.

In his book, Antietam: The Photographic Legacy of America's Bloddiest Day, William Frassanito discusses aspects of this image only visible when seen in stereo: "... to the right of the rails was an opening on the horizon, showing a tree far in the distance. In stereo it is clear that this tree was situated on another, still higher ridge." In published stereo card versions of the image, the distant hill and tree are cropped (see Bob Zeller's The Civil Ware In Depth, p44)

The version presented here is a composite between two different negative sources. Although LC-DIG-cwpb-00242 is a complete stereo negative, the quality of the right hand image is poor compared to that of LC-DIG-cwpb-01112. The best of the two were combined to create this complete stereo.
